Taking the First Step
Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest fraternal organisations, rooted in principles of integrity, charity, and mutual respect. Membership is open to men of good character who believe in a Supreme Being and wish to contribute positively to their community.
The District Grand Lodge of Bombay, operating under the United Grand Lodge of England, welcomes enquiries from those who feel drawn to the Craft. The path to membership follows a time-honoured process designed to ensure that every candidate enters with understanding and sincerity.
The Process
- Enquire: Reach out to the District Grand Lodge or speak with a Freemason you know. Initial contact is informal and confidential.
- Meet: You will be invited to meet with members of a lodge so that both sides can learn about each other in a relaxed setting.
- Proposal: If there is mutual interest, a proposer and seconder from within the lodge will support your application.
- Ballot: The lodge members vote on your candidature in accordance with established procedures.
- Initiation: Upon a favourable ballot, you will be initiated into the lodge in a formal ceremony.

Freemasonry in Bombay carries forward a tradition of fellowship that traces its roots back centuries, even as it adapts to the rhythm of contemporary life across the city and its wider region. Lodges within the District Grand Lodge of Bombay operate under the constitutions of the United Grand Lodge of England, linking local Brethren to a global fraternity that spans continents. Meetings are spaces where members gather not merely for ritual, but for candid conversation, charitable work, and the quiet practice of mutual support that has always defined the Craft.
Becoming a Freemason begins with a simple, voluntary step: an honest enquiry. The District Grand Lodge of Bombay welcomes men of good character who hold a belief in a Supreme Being and who feel drawn to the principles the Order upholds. Candidates are encouraged to learn at their own pace, asking questions of existing members and visiting a lodge to observe before making any formal commitment. This unhurried approach reflects the Order's long-standing belief that genuine interest cannot be rushed or imposed, but only carefully nurtured over time.
The journey from enquiry to full membership follows a structured path designed to ensure understanding at every stage. After initial conversations with a mentor or proposer, a candidate is proposed and seconded, then proceeds through ceremonies that explain the symbols, history, and moral teachings of the Craft. Between each step there are intervals for reflection, study, and gradual integration into lodge life. Advancement through the degrees is marked by deepening knowledge rather than by passage of time alone, allowing each new Brother to absorb the traditions in a measured and meaningful way.
Once raised as a Master Mason, the new Brother becomes part of a network that extends well beyond the walls of any single lodge. He is invited to take part in charitable projects, educational initiatives, and the social gatherings that strengthen bonds between members across districts. Many Brethren also pursue further light through associated orders such as the Royal Arch, which complements and extends the craft degrees. Whatever direction a member chooses, the emphasis throughout remains on character, service, and the enduring friendships that Freemasonry is built upon.
