District Board of General Purposes (2016–17)

The District Board of General Purposes serves as the principal administrative body overseeing the affairs of the District Grand Lodge of Bombay. Its membership draws from senior officers and experienced brethren who guide policy, manage district resources, and ensure that all lodges operate in accordance with the established constitutions and regulations.

The Board convenes regularly to review matters of governance, discipline, finance, and strategic direction for the district.

Officers & Who's Who

The District Grand Lodge maintains a roster of appointed and elected officers who carry out the ceremonial, administrative, and charitable work of the district. The Who's Who directory lists the current office-bearers, including the District Grand Master, Deputy District Grand Master, and other senior ranks.

These officers represent the district at official functions and maintain the fraternal link with the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) and the Supreme Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of England.

Mission, Vision & Values

The District Grand Lodge of Bombay has articulated a formal Mission, Vision and Values Statement that underpins all its activities. This statement reflects the district's commitment to brotherly love, relief, and truth — the core tenets of Freemasonry — while addressing the unique context of the Bombay jurisdiction.

The statement guides decision-making at every level, from individual lodges to the District Board of General Purposes.

Governing Documents

The district operates under two foundational texts that ensure uniformity and proper practice across all lodges:

  • Book of Constitutions & IGMC — the supreme governing document containing the ancient charges, general regulations, and the Information for the Guidance of Members of the Craft (IGMC).
  • Model of Lodge By-laws — a template framework that individual lodges within the district adapt for their own governance, ensuring consistency with district and UGLE standards.

These documents are available to members through the District Grand Lodge office.

Governance within the District Grand Lodge of Bombay rests on a layered framework of boards and committees that uphold the principles laid down in the constitutions and regulations of the craft. Senior officers and experienced brethren share responsibility for policy formation, financial oversight, disciplinary review, and the strategic direction of charitable and benevolent programmes across the district. Regular conventions, well documented circulars, and a transparent hierarchy of authority help ensure continuity between the central authorities and individual lodges operating throughout Bombay, Poona, Goa, and the wider region. By pairing historical ritual with modern administrative practice, the governance model aims to preserve fraternal tradition while remaining responsive to contemporary challenges facing masons and the communities they serve.

Affiliation & Authority

The District Grand Lodge of Bombay derives its warrant and authority from the United Grand Lodge of England, the oldest grand lodge in the world. The district also maintains close ties with the Supreme Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of England, which governs Royal Arch Masonry within the jurisdiction.

All lodges and chapters in the district operate under charters granted by these parent bodies, ensuring continuity of tradition and adherence to the ancient landmarks of the Craft.
